Human rights and the Treaty of Waitangi

New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, predates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by 108 years. Yet as the English Magna Carta (1215) has general human rights significance, so the Treaty has particular human rights significance in Aotearoa New Zealand. This resource links the articles of the TOW to human rights and incorporates discussion on the issues surrounding the rights of indigenous peoples to self-determination. International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

This is a copy of a document drawn up by the United Nations High Commissioner  for Human Rights.  It recognizes that in accordance with the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the ideal of freedom from fear and want can only be achieved if everyone may enjoy his economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights.  The guidelines include obligations that the states and individuals need to undertake to meet those rights.

New Zealand Action Plan for Human Rights

The Human Rights Amendment Act 2001 gave the Human Rights Commission the responsibility for developing a national human rights action plan (NZAPHR). The Action Plan proposes certain actions and measures that should be taken to ensure equality amoungst all residents of New Zealand, and focuses especially on children, disabled people and race relations. It covers civil and political rights, social and cultural rights, and the legal and policy framework for protecting and promoting human rights in New Zealand.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child and education
